How to unsubscribe really good

by Oli Lane

EmailUsAnimated

If you’re anything like me I’m betting you’re currently receiving emails from about 20 societies which you only put your name down for because you felt sorry for the guy at the table in the corner at the Freshers’ Fayre. Here’s a quick guide to cleaning the junk out.

One thing to note: please don’t try to unsubscribe from lists like the JCR mailing lists or department mailing lists, since you’re very likely to miss out on important information if you do.

The first thing to do is to look for an “Unsubscribe” link at the bottom of the email — many lists have one, and it’s usually the easiest option. If you can’t find it or can’t get it to work, follow the rest of the guide.

Before starting, you need to check if the mailing list ends in “@lists.cam.ac.uk” or “@srcf.net”. Almost all societies will use one of these services for their mailing lists, so I’ll be focussing on those two.

If the address ends in “@lists.cam.ac.uk”

  • Head to the cam.ac.uk Mailman page.
  • Click on the “Log in using Raven” link, and enter your Raven details.
  • You should now see a list of all the @lists.cam.ac.uk mailing lists you are subscribed to. Select the list you want to unsubscribe from.
  • Click on the “Unsubscribe or edit options” button.
  • Click on “Unsubscribe”, after ticking the box to say you’re sure.

If the address ends in “@srcf.net”

  • Head to the SRCF mailing list directory.
  • You will be presented with a list of all the mailing lists that SRCF hosts. Select the list you want to unsubscribe from.
  • Enter your email address in the box at the bottom of the page and click the “Unsubscribe or edit options” button.
  • Click on the “Unsubscribe” button
  • You will now be sent an email with a confirmation link to finish the unsubscription process.

CUSU Shadowing Scheme

by Oli Lane

Be part of the UK’s biggest student-led Access initiative! Sign up to volunteer for the 2014 CUSU Shadowing Scheme – there’s only one week left to sign up!

Every year the Shadowing Scheme allows talented state-educated Year 12s from schools and families with little or no tradition of higher education to visit Cambridge and experience university life first-hand.  Shadows will spend three days here in late January and early February, staying in college and shadowing their undergrad mentors to lectures, practicals and supervisions as well as going to activities organised by student societies.

We need as many Tit Hallers to sign up as possible – anyone from any year can apply! As a mentor you can have a huge impact on someone’s perception of university, and in particular what Cambridge is like. The deadline is the 24th Oct so get signing up!

As a bonus, here’s a tangentially related but very cool video:
