    Japanese Works : Izumi meisho zue. Akisato Ritō 秋里籬島, active 1780-1814. Japanese Works. <p style='text-align: justify;'><i>Izumi meisho zue</i> is an example of a late eighteenth-century gazeteer, printed and illustrated by woodblock print. Cambridge's copy was owned by William George Aston (1841-1911), whose ex libris stamp appears <a href='' onclick='store.loadPage(2);return false;'>inside the front cover.</a></p><p style='text-align: justify;'>This copy may be compared to two digitized copies in Waseda University Library (<a target='_blank' class='externalLink' href='http://www.wul.waseda.ac.jp/kotenseki/html/ru04/ru04_00348/index.html'>Ru 04-00348</a> and <a target='_blank' class='externalLink' href='http://www.wul.waseda.ac.jp/kotenseki/html/ru04/ru04_04749/index.html'>Ru 04-04749</a>) and one in the <a target='_blank' class='externalLink' href='http://dl.ndl.go.jp/info:ndljp/pid/2563477?tocOpened=1'>National Diet Library of Japan</a>.</p><p style='text-align: justify;'>The <a href='' onclick='store.loadPage(191);return false;'>final page</a> of the main text identifies the author as Ritō Akisato Shōseki 籬島秋里湘夕, a name used by Akisato Ritō 秋里籬島, active 1780-1814.     Japanese Works : Hanjimono. Japanese Works. <p style='text-align: justify;'>A scrapbook of written ephemera in a scroll style. 土井利恒 (Doi Toshitsune or Doi Toshitsugu) collected various written documents and pasted them to a scroll, with illustrations included. The impression of the ex-libris stamp indicates that this had been kept by the Doi family (土井家). This scroll was prepared around Bunsei 文政 period (1818-1830).     Joseph Needham : Joseph Needham's journal of his tour in North-West China, Aug.7-Dec.14, 1943. Joseph Needham. <p style='text-align: justify;'>In this journal, Dr. Needham records his journey in a truck from Chungking (重慶 Chongqing) to Lanchow (蘭州 Lanzhou) via Chengtu (成都 Chengdu), then up through Gansu province to Tunhuang (敦煌 Dunhuang) and back. [Full itinerary]. On the first leg of the journey to Lanchow, he was accompanied by SBSCO staff members H.T. Huang (Huang Hsing-Tsung / Huang Xingzong) 黃興宗 and Liao Hung-Ying (Liao Hongying) 廖鴻英, as well as Derek Bryan from the British Embassy, Edward Beltz, an American oil geologist, and a young scientist Chen Tzu-hsin (Chen Zixin) 陳自信. In another truck travelled the famous explorer Sir Eric Teichman (1884-1944). From Lanchow to Chienfodong and back he was accompanied by H.T. Huang (who travelled back to Lanchow separately), Rewi Alley (1897-1987), Sun Kuang-chun (Sun Guangjun) 孫光俊 and Wang Wan-sheng (Wang Wansheng) 王萬盛, two boys from the Lanchow Bailie School 蘭州培黎學校, the painter Wu Tso-Rjen (Wu Zuoren) 吳作人, as well as a driver, Kuang Wei 鄺威, and a mechanic from Lanchow Yu Te-hsin (Yu Dexin) 宇德新. Donations of materials, labour, and/or money in exchange for religious merit have been cornerstones of Buddhism in China since its arrival. In the Republican era (1912-1949), when thousands of Buddhist publications were circulating in China, donations for merit continued to help support the production of some Buddhist books, but many others were funded by fixed and circulating capital from for-profit commercial publishers or (mostly) not-for-profit Buddhist organisations. My presentation will examine evidence from Buddhist publications of the Republican era on how they made use of donations to help fund their work, how donors were recognised and recorded, and how the discourse surrounding merit transformed over this period. My hypothesis is that the longstanding core belief in the merit of publishing Buddhist books was augmented and enhanced by a number of new approaches, made
