At their summit this year in Hangzhou, G20 leaders have been tackling head-on the effects of a languishing and increasingly unequal global economy. Encouraging more inclusive economic growth was high on their political agenda, perhaps because they understand its connection to the recent surge of anti-establishment politics around the world. And for the first time, in what may prove to be a watershed moment, they also discussed how to "green" the financial system as part of supporting strong, sustainable and balanced growth. (G20 leaders “Green Finance” communiqué.). They were right to do so; risks to growth linked to environmental issues are becoming more complex and interconnected and more material to business. A key question is whether financial institutions are managing environmental risks appropriately? I am a historian of pre-modern Asia, with a particular interest in scientific and other textual exchanges between the Islamicate world and China; cultural, intellectual and social histories of Late Imperial China; histories of medicine and science in Asia; and, histories of the book and textuality. I studied for my BA degree in East Asian Studies and Economics at Tel Aviv University, and for an MA degree in History at National Chengchi University (國立政治大學) in Taipei. I earned a PhD degree from Princeton University with a dissertation titled: "The Vicissitudes of Late Imperial China's Accommodation of Arabo-Persian Knowledge of the Natural World, 16th-18th Centuries" in 2016. I was a recipient of the Thomas Arthur Arnold Fund for Excellence in Historical Research fellowship at the Zvi Yavetz School of Historical Studies, Tel Aviv University in 2017 and held postdoctoral fellowships at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin and the Berlin Center for the History of Knowledge

One of the great privileges of working in The Parker Library is the opportunity to slowly discover the collections, to spend a few minutes looking at a manuscript whose shelfmark you don’t recognise, to talk to readers working on things you’ve never considered, to share in the excitement of new discoveries, and to learn just a little bit more about an item, bit by bit. One could spend a lifetime getting to know the collection, but even given many such lifetimes, there would still be many items that I will never even begin to understand; for now, they must remain filed away in memory, black holes sitting next to the tiny pinpricks of light that are connected to their neighbors on the shelves. Every year we welcome the students from the Corpus Christi Medicine and English Summer School Program to The Parker Library. During each of these visits we give the participants a tour of our current exhibition and then bring out a few items that we believe may be of particular interests to the students that they are allowed to (gently) explore as we talk about the history of the book. This year, I was delighted to share MS 227, Curing Thousands of Diseases, an eight volume Chinese work that was printed in the 1660s, and one of my

Carbon dioxide levels are reportedly at historic highs. News of pollution has become so routine in China that we risk becoming immune to the urgency of the message. In a business context, the question is not whether we are experiencing environmental degradation, but rather whether companies have the appetite to do something about it – and if so, how? The UK’s executive education sector is working in China to encourage international businesses to shift their mindset from traditional business decision-making models to sustainable models. There has been progress at a policy level and an increase in the number of domestic and overseas companies championing the sustainability cause. Japanese Works. <p style='text-align: justify;'>This is a work of the commentaries on Shaku makaenron 釈摩訶衍論 by the Buddhist scholar Fa Wu 法悟 (12th century), written on the request of the Emperor Tian You 天佑 of Kara-Khitan (Western Liao, 西遼). Shaku makaenron is itself a work of commentaries on the Daijō kishinron 大乗起信論 (a treatise on awakening faith in the Mahāyāna) which is a Chinese translation of a work by Aśvaghoşa.</p><p style='text-align: justify;'>Shaku makaenron san gensho 釈摩訶衍論賛玄疏 was introduced into Japan through Korea in 1105. This particular edition was printed at the Mount Kōya (高野山) in 1288 and it is called the Kōya edition (Kōya-ban, 高野版).</p><p style='text-align: justify;'>This is the fourth volume of five and the second oldest printed material in our Japanese Collection.</p>. of. Japanese Works. <p style='text-align: justify;'>A scrapbook of written ephemera in a scroll style. 土井利恒 (Doi Toshitsune or Doi Toshitsugu) collected various written documents and pasted them to a scroll, with illustrations included. The impression of the ex-libris stamp indicates that this had been kept by the Doi family (土井家). This scroll was prepared around Bunsei 文政 period (1818-1830).
