6 Sep 2022: Introduction to Chinese characters. Chinese is written with characters (汉字 [漢字] Hànzì). Chinese characters have two forms: traditional and simplified. The origin of Chinese characters dated back to the 14th century BC in Shang Dynasty, known as scripts on oracle bones (甲骨文 jiǎ gǔ wén, characters inscribed on bones or tortoise shells). Chinese characters are ideographical. Usually, one character represents one word or a morpheme (a unit for constructing a word), which means one character contains the combined information of sound (pronunciation), shape (what it looks like) and meaning. Types of Chinese characters. It is generally believed that Chinese characters were created and derived in six ways. They are: pictographic (e.g., 山 shān, mountain, hill, 人 rén, person, 口 kǒu, mouth, ), indicative (e.g., 一 yī, one; 二èr, two; 三 sān, three; 上 shàng, up; 下 xià, down), pictophonectic, semasiographic (e.g., 明 míng, bright; 信 xìn, believe), phonetically loaned (e.g., 要 yào, want ->腰 yāo, waist, 北 běi, north-> 背 bèi, back) and mutually explanatory (e.g., 考 kǎo, test -> 老 lǎo, old; 顶 ding, top -> 巅 diān, peak). I am a historian of pre-modern Asia, with a particular interest in scientific and other textual exchanges between the Islamicate world and China; cultural, intellectual and social histories of Late Imperial China; histories of medicine and science in Asia; and, histories of the book and textuality. I studied for my BA degree in East Asian Studies and Economics at Tel Aviv University, and for an MA degree in History at National Chengchi University (國立政治大學) in Taipei. I earned a PhD degree from Princeton University with a dissertation titled: "The Vicissitudes of Late Imperial China's Accommodation of Arabo-Persian Knowledge of the Natural World, 16th-18th Centuries" in 2016. I was a recipient of the Thomas Arthur Arnold Fund for Excellence in Historical Research fellowship at the Zvi Yavetz School of Historical Studies, Tel Aviv University in 2017 and held postdoctoral fellowships at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin and the Berlin Center for the History of Knowledge

[To be read before The Royal Statistical Society at the Society’s 2021 annual conference held inManchester on Wednesday, September 8th, 2021, the President, Professor Sylvia Richardson, in theChair]. Abstract. This article reviews some early investigations and research studies in the first weeks of the coron-avirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic from a statistician’s perspective. These investigations werebased on very small datasets but were momentous in the initial global reactions to the pandemic. Thearticle discusses the initial evidence of high infectiousness of COVID-19 and why that conclusion wasnot reached faster than in reality. Further reanalyses of some published COVID-19 studies show thatthe epidemic growth was dramatically underestimated by compartmental models, and the lack of fitcould have been clearly identified by simple data visualization.
